Mr. Smith gathered much of his mechanical engineering experience through his positions with the Monsanto Company and Frank Beaty Associates. In 1980, Mr. Smith established his own firm, Paul T. Smith, Consulting Engineer, Inc. His background includes a wide variety of mechanical design applications, both new and renovations, in the industrial, commercial and private sectors.

Mr. Smith has been involved in every aspect of consulting mechanical engineering from conception to construction by doing feasibility studies, preparation of detailed energy analysis, preparing preliminary design, comparing alternatives, compiling cost analyses and estimates, drawing plans, selecting equipment, writing specification, preparing Contract Documents, assisting in bid selection, inspecting construction and installation of projects. Many architects throughout Alabama have called on Mr. Smith’s experience to correct the inability of the existing HVAC system to meet the required loads of the building, to help minimize utility costs, improve the control of space conditions and correct indoor air quality problems.

In all of Mr. Smith’s projects, quality of design has been stressed with emphasis on simplicity, maintainability and minimum cost. His engineering provides progressive plumbing and HVAC design with an innovative approach.

Because of Mr. Smith’s experience with ASHRAE Standards for ventilation, he began doing extensive research and education on Indoor Air Quality. PSA has been involved in many projects resolving building commissioning, mold and mildew problems, and indoor air quality health issues. Some of Mr. Smith’s courses and training include:

  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Integrated Approach to Building Commissioning, New Orleans, LA
  • Handling 100% Outside Air
  • Design & Remediation to Achieve Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, San Antonio, TX
  • Filtration
  • Designing Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems
  • Building Humidity & Mold Control, Chicago, IL

Phillip Hendrix (Engineer), a registered E.I.T, has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama and has three years experience in HVAC and plumbing design for various buildings and schools throughout the North Alabama area. Mr. Hendrix previously worked with McDonnell Douglas and Boeing before joining the firm. He is involved with the daily operations of design standards and network support for the office. Mr. Hendrix is currently working toward his Professional Engineers License and is a member of ASHRAE.

Jan Smith (Project Coordinator) has twenty-five years of administrative experience having spent the last eleven as Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Officer for Paul Smith & Associates. Mrs. Smith handles all engineering project coordination, RFQ’s, RFP’s and policy functions for the engineering division. She has worked extensively with architectural firms, local school systems, commercial and industrial clients, and the State Building Commission handling all phases of contract documents and contract administration for PSA projects.

Kelly Clark (Engineering Assistant) spent the last six years managing an electrical contracting company before joining the PSA team. Her experience in the construction industry coupled with her experience in all phases of office administration serve the engineering division well in assisting the team in meeting all of the project goals.

Eric Smith (CAD Design) heads the CAD team, organizing the CAD production of all PSA projects. Mr. Smith has been with PSA for several years and his training and experience make him invaluable to the project team.
